For many students, science can feel like a daunting subject—but not in Mr. Tuomey’s class—located in room 224. With nearly three decades of teaching experience, Mr. Tuomey has found a way to make even the most complex concepts feel accessible and engaging. Whether it’s conducting hands-on labs, working through interactive gizmos, or answering thought-provoking questions, Mr. Tuomey keeps his students engaged with a variety of activities. He provides worksheets and ensures both present and absent work is available to help everyone grasp the material and stay on track.
Mr. Tuomey didn’t always know he wanted to be a teacher.
Growing up, he had a natural fascination with science, but it wasn’t until college—when he worked at an extended day program for elementary school kids—that he discovered his passion for working with students.
That decision led him on a journey that now spans 28 years, with 23 of those spent at Brunswick. When he’s not inspiring young students, Mr. Tuomey has a long list of hobbies that keep him busy. From weight lifting and running to repairing cars in his driveway workshop, he’s the kind of person who loves to work with his hands.
In fact, if he hadn’t chosen teaching, he says, “I think I would pursue automotive repair, be an electrician, or become a plumber,” All careers that, as he points out, involve plenty of science.
Beyond the classroom, Mr. Tuomey is deeply fascinated by space exploration, particularly the discoveries made by the James Webb Telescope. “I hope in my lifetime the existence of life outside of Earth is not the only planet in the universe to host life.” His passion for discovery is something he hopes to pass on to his students, encouraging them to embrace curiosity and wonder about the world around them.
As for advice?
It’s simple: put down the phone. “I believe cell phones are the worst thing that has happened to the classroom,” he admits. His message is clear — stay present, stay curious, and take advantage of the learning opportunities right in front of you.
With a career filled with inspiring young minds, operating swimming pools for 26 summers, and even founding two businesses, Mr Tuomey’s journey proves that science isn’t just something you learn—it’s something you live.
And in his classroom, that makes all the difference.
