Anne Zumbach—a highly loved and respected math teacher here at Brunswick High School. She is involved in the school and community in so many ways from coaching sports to being a leader in boy scouts.

Before coming to Brunswick High, she graduated from Shepherd University with a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education with a double major of Math and Physical Education. From there she got her first teaching position at St. Johns in Prospect Hall, where she taught for two years. Then she taught another two years at Linganore High School and has been at Brunswick ever since.

The one question that she commonly gets asked is: when are you going to retire?…

…to which she often responds with, “Everyone says you know when it is time to retire—hasn’t hit me yet.”

As she has been teaching at Brunswick for so long, she has acquired an old school teaching style; as many of the assignments are the same from years ago. Many students have expressed how they enjoy her note taking style as it is easy to understand and follow. Her class is definitely an adjustment at first but students grow to appreciate her as she is one of the best teachers.

Mrs. Zumbach, also known as Mrs. Z, expressed that her favorite part of teaching is: “interacting with students.” She also expressed that teaching has taught her patience with herself and interacting with students.

Since she has taught at Brunswick for so many years she has taught many generations of students. I asked her what she thought about it, to which she replied, “I like that I have taught many generations from being a small town. I know a lot of people and it is no surprise when I get a second generation student.”

Other than being a teacher, she is known to be an outstanding coach, alongside her husband, Lee Zumbach. They have been coaching at Brunswick since September 1980. Before coming to Brunswick she had a history of coaching JV basketball and softball at St. Johns and as an assistant track coach at Linganore High.

When she started at Brunswick she initially coached gymnastics in the fall of 1980 before picking up running. Now she and Lee are known as the cross country and track coaches. They have shaped the sport of running from leading the cross country team to states sixteen times and winning nine times. As well as winning one outdoor track state title. When asked about her favorite part of coaching, “Watching kids improve and develop a desire to run after high school.”

Mrs. Zumbach is a staple to the Brunswick community for her many contributions. She represents what a good teacher should be as many students have expressed that they learn so much more in her class than any of their other math teachers. She motivates and pushes her students and athletes to do their best and achieve their goals.
