One of the most important factors for health and wellness in young adults is great physical health, and the vast majority of schools have their own weight rooms and gyms within the building.
Brunswick is no exception to that, but the weight room needs an update. Looking at the gym, almost all of the plates, bars, racks and benches are rusted, torn, or bent. The weight room is also very small and the equipment is limited.
There are only have six racks for benching and squatting, 6 pulling platforms, and a single leg press machine and leg extension machine. The dumbbell selection is adequate for the school’s capacity, but a lot of the dumbbells are in poor condition. Many of the issues with the weight room just stem from the overall age of the building and also the lack of funding, in general, given to Brunswick High School.
There are several rubber plates that are cracked and nearly every bar and metal plates are getting pretty rusty. And the room is just all around dirty and old. There could be some possible safety concerns in the near future with some of the racks, as many of the safety bars on the racks are bent and rusted. If one of them were to be too bent and not catch the bar, then it could result in serious injury, and the gym is already an injury prone place, especially with the high amount of people in such a small room.
I took a weight training class in sophomore year, and it was difficult to do everything I wanted to do because I had to share a small space and limited equipment with 30-some other students.
Because of these issues I think it’s enough to say that Brunswick’s weight room is outdated and we are in need of an update. Not just to the equipment—but also to the room itself.
