Many people say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Staring off your day with a good breakfast gives your body enough energy for the day ahead. Students who don’t eat breakfast may feel tired throughout the day, making it hard to focus

In a survey of a group of students from Brunswick High School, only 16.7% of the students eat breakfast every day of the week. Most students only eat breakfast 3 or 4 days a week.

Why do Students Not Eat Breakfast?

Many students skip breakfast for a variety of reasons. Students claim they don’t have enough time to cook, are too lazy, or just don’t have the appetite in the morning.

Ainsley Fink, a Brunswick sophomore said, “I don’t wake up early enough in the morning to make myself breakfast […] Even on the weekends by the time I wake up I have a hard time eating breakfast but I could eat lunch and dinner right away.”

Many students agree with this statement saying that they are either not hungry in the morning or just don’t enjoy breakfast food. Overall the biggest issue seems to be time, whether this means they don’t wake up early enough or just don’t have any food that can be made quickly.

Hannah Davis, a senior said, “I try to eat breakfast but it just depends sometimes I wake up starving or wake up not hungry at all but I am always really hungry in my first class so I bring a breakfast to go.”

Breakfast that can be taken on the go is definitely a more convenient option for students who don’t have the time to eat at home. Foods like smoothies or breakfast bars can easily be brought and eaten on the way to or at school.

The Importance of Eating Breakfast

Breakfast greatly contributes to the needed nutrient intake. Protein is very important to start the day off with because it is very important for muscle health and helps to feel less hungry throughout the day. Yogurt, eggs, and meat are all good breakfast foods with lots of protein.

Including healthy fats in breakfast, such as avocado or nuts can help your body stay energized throughout the day. This is very important for students because they need energy to focus in school and participate in other activities. Some students can see the effect of not eating a good breakfast, Torin Connor, a sophomore says, “I always eat breakfast because when I don’t eat breakfast I’m cranky.”

Fruits and vegetables also add to a good breakfast because they provide vitamins and support overall health. Many people do not eat the recommended amount of fruit each day, so adding it into breakfast can help make a good habit.

Including all of these nutrients into a breakfast when low on time, can definitely be a struggle for many students, but there are many healthy foods that can be made in a short amount of time.
