Mother’s Day—What Moms Really Want
May has arrived and many are starting to realize just how close Mother’s Day really is. Rather than getting the woman who has shaped you into the person you are today a Mother’s Day card from the clearance section, show her she’s appreciated with something more personal and considerate. Not sure what that may be? Well, this list of 10 things to do for your mom on Mother’s Day will help you find the perfect gift for her no matter what skills you have or what she enjoys.

When it comes to moms, they often don’t need anything fancy to make Mother’s Day enjoyable; they just want to spend time with you. I mean, it is Mother’s Day for crying out loud, and you remind them what it’s like to be a mom. This could be as simple as watching T.V., solving a puzzle, or going out somewhere for lunch. If you don’t live with your mom you should go visit her and if she’s too far, then having a long heartfelt facetime or call will make her day as well. Quality time with your mom also means making the plans. Moms spend most of their life planning things so give her a day where she doesn’t have to worry about what you’re doing, where you are going to be, and when you need to be there. Instead, handle that for her and give her that break and day to just relax and be with you. Most moms have mothers of their own in their lives, so even allowing her to be with her own mom too would make her Mother’s Day because having a break to be around the people she loves for a day is bound to make her happy.

Contrary to the mothers who love spending time with their children on Mother’s Day, many would appreciate a day to themselves. After all, everyone knows how hard moms work every day, so one day of quiet and relaxation is long overdo for many. So rather than being attached to her hip all day, schedule a time slot for her to get a massage, or to go to a spa, or get her nails done. If those things don’t seem like something your mom would enjoy, you could bring your mom to her favorite hiking trail so she can have a calm relaxing hike alone, or allow her to do a hobby she hasn’t gotten a chance to do in a while because she’s been preoccupied with parenting. Not all moms are the same, so while some may want the whole day spent with their kids, others simply just want some time alone. So use these ideas to give your mom that well deserved break.

One thing people love is food, so why not make it one of a kind by making it yourself? Whether it’s a family recipe, or your mom’s favorite dessert it’s bound to put a smile on her face. Ideas could be making her breakfast in bed, a lovely dinner, her favorite drink, some brownies, or even baking with her. Making this food for her will show how much you pay attention to what she likes and so not only will she be treated to a homemade treat, she’ll also get to see how much she’s cared for.

As mentioned before, and what will continue to be emphasized, moms work hard every day and one way they do that is by keeping things clean. So this mothers day, give the mom in your life a break by doing the dishes, cleaning her car, deep cleaning the living room, or even just taking the photos off the shelf to dust. This way, she’ll have one less day worrying about whether or not her house is clean enough and won’t have to deal with the hassle of doing the work around the house. This is her day, so show that by making sure she gets a true break, and handle her duties for at least just one day.

Everyone has things in their life that they see while window shopping or have seen ads for on their feed. Has your mom ever mentioned something that she thinks is nice? Something that she wishes she could have? Well now is the perfect time to do it. Buy the thing she’s always wanted, whether it’s that purse she always talks about, or even just the nice set of pens she’s been eyeing up but never actually gets herself because it’s “a waste of money.” This shows you pay attention to what she likes, and now she’ll have it without feeling like she’s wasting her money on things for herself.

Something moms don’t get a lot of is breaks, so give her that break by taking her somewhere or giving her the opportunity to go. Like giving her concert tickets to her favorite artist, or bringing her to her favorite museum, or that city she’s always wanted to visit. Even just the store she’s been dying to go into but hasn’t found the time to, get her a gift card for it and send her on her way and maybe she’ll even want you to go with her. Being between work and home consistently can be hard, and everyone deserves the time to go somewhere that’s out of their ordinary routine. So what better time is there to give her that other than this Mother’s Day?

As a teenager, or just someone who’s trying to make ends meet, finding things for a reasonable price is hard which makes getting your mom the perfect gift this May difficult. Well, look no further! Now that Easter is over, baskets are on sale, and it’s your time to shine as the perfect child by making her a gift basket catered to her interests. Now this may seem like the opposite of saving money or finding a gift within your price range but, I’m not talking about a basket filled with diamonds (unless you can do that,) I mean a personalized basket of her favorite things whether it’s the chocolate or gum she seems to love, or fancy coffee brew. Fill it with things that are personal to her, but at the same time with things she doesn’t get all the time.

Some of the best gifts are the gifts from the heart, more or less gifts that are made from your hands as well. Give her a gift she can’t buy anywhere else, make it yourself! Whether it’s finding a paper flower tutorial on YouTube or a drawing of her, this will be a gift she’ll always remember. Some other possible ideas could be handmade jewelry, a bookmark, decorated picture frame, candles, a dish for her items, a place to hold her keys, the list goes on and on. So think outside of the box, or even just within the walls of your Pinterest board. Most likely, she’ll have whatever you make her in her house for a lifetime and it’ll always remind her of this year’s wonderful Mother’s Day.

Flowers might seem basic, but I don’t know a single person who doesn’t love a fresh bouquet on their dinner table or bedside. Don’t just get her any flowers, get her ones that are her favorite color or are her favorite type. Flowers are a great addition to any gift, they’re easy to obtain and quite affordable especially as a last minute gift. To make it even more thoughtful, you could pick out a vase to put them in or a short and sweet note. Leave her house smelling sweet this Mother’s Day and her love for you even sweeter, buy her the flowers.

Last, but certainly not least, give your mom a card that’s handmade and written with your love in mind. You can make the whole entire card yourself or if you’re not the crafty type, you can opt for buying a meaningful card and then just using your own words for the inside. But this mothers day, don’t give your mom a card from the dollar store, sign your name, then call it a day. Make it unique, make it personal, make it so it shows how much you truly care.
In the end, whether this is your very first Mother’s Day or one of your last, it’s never too late to change old habits. So make this Mother’s Day unforgettable and give your mom the day she’s always wanted and deserves. Here are a few quotes from local mothers and students about what they like to do:
