Brunswick’s Mr. Belcher Before Teaching

From Protecting Famous Rock Bands To High School Students

February 9, 2023

Curtiss Belcher is a teacher at Brunswick High School—but what a lot of students do not know is that he had an interesting career before teaching. After high school, at just 19 years old, Belcher was working for a management company called “Q Prime.” After about 160 hours’ worth of training, Belcher was a personal security guard for Mick Mars, from the band Mötley Crüe (who sold over 100 million albums) on their 1994 US tour. As well as working with some of the most iconic musicians such as Ozzy Osbourne, who Belcher describes as a down-to-earth, kind person.

Although the job does sound like a lot of fun, Belcher assures that this job is not for just anyone. On one of the first days on the job, the band was doing an appearance in Time Square. During the performance, a man had a knife and was planning to be violent. Belcher, along with other bodyguards, escorted the man with the knife off the premises.

Another memorable moment while on the job the lead singer of House of Pain, famously known for their hit song “Jump Around,” started a riot. There was police involvement, weapons were pulled, and tear gas was used.

Teaching is Belcher’s passion, connecting with the students, and being an influence in others’ lives are what he loves the most.

This job is no joke—it can be scary at some points, but there were some plus sides. Belcher explained that this job really got him into Rock and Roll music. He was able to hear a lot of songs off stage during the many tours. One experience that Belcher described was during a solo that the drummer of Mötley Crüe: (Tommy Lee). He explained that the drum set was lifted off the stage and above the fans. He says that was his favorite part of the performance, as well as his favorite song “Dr. Feelgood.” Belcher says that when the band got on the bus, so did he. Always at arm’s length, they were always around the performers they were protecting because it was a full-time, 24/7 job.

Curtiss Belchers’ life before teaching was different than most, and you might be left wondering how he went down the teaching path. Belcher says that he took a childhood development class in high school and absolutely loved it. Graduating from “the best college, Towson University,” he got his degree in early childhood development. After college he coached for a while, realizing that high school kids are “pretty cool.”

Teaching is Belcher’s passion, connecting with the students, and being an influence in others’ lives are what he loves the most. If you get the chance to talk to Mr. Belcher, make sure you do because not only is he a cool person—but a wonderful teacher.
