Back in November 2023, some of the Garnet & Gold Gazette staff attended Hood College’s Media Day. A day to experience elements of public relations, communications, and journalism.Throughout the entire day, the staff gained so much knowledge about skepticism, crisis management, and photography at the college-level.

The day started with a basic introduction to the communications major by attending, one-hour sessions on elements of college-like classes for that major. After getting a true college lecture, students had a collegiate lunch experience in the dining hall. Shortly after lunch and a brisk walk across campus, G&G Gazette staff members: Michael Simpson, Baylin Hoffman, Reese Fitch, Patryk McLane, Ava Stiglicz, Kylie Lancaster, Sammy Joseph, and Elani Joseph, made their way to Hood College’s broadcast studio.

Before sitting in front of the cameras, the staff was given all the information they would need for what they would be reporting a local incident: the Route 15 tanker truck accidentThe accident happened back in March 2023. They then split up into groups of two and wrote a script that the group would read in front of the camera for the production. The mock press release was evaluated for all scenarios of local procedure.  The Hood College students in charge of media day reviewed our scripts to make sure they were formatted correctly and then set up the broadcast studio. Here is the news report each group made:

Baylin & Michael

Reese & Patryk

Kylie & Ava

Sammy & Elani

The Garnet & Gold Gazette staff had such a great time at Hood College’s Media Day and learned so much from the process. Many staff members have applied to this college and may follow into those majors in the future.
