What Is February Star Sanctuary?
February Star Sanctuary is a non-profit organization that is home to over 200 rescue cats and twenty-eight horses. Their mission statement is “…to rescue, rehabilitate, rehome and provide refuge for horses and cats in need.” and “We give the unwanted a safe, secure home and teach children compassion… building a generation of animal advocates, one child at a time.” February Star Sanctuary is a family run organization that has helped many animals residing on the farm. The farm has saved many cats and horses from euthanasia and helps them heal and rehabilitate when they are sick.
While working at the farm, I’ve come to know and love many sweet cats and horses. Primarily, I work with the cats every weekend and the horses only during the summer. The cats crave attention and pets — I gladly oblige. My family and I enjoy giving the cats names based on looks or personalities at both the barn and the trailer. The trailer is home to most of the kittens and cats that are up for adoption. The trailer is a transient location that, thankfully, many cats don’t have to stay in for long, but it’s very fun to spend time with them while they are there.
A perfect example of the hilarious interactions we’ve had at the trailer is a cat we named “Cooper”. One of his favorite things to do was to jump onto our back every time we bent down near him. He made time at the trailer so entertaining and was a joy to be around. I know his new owner is loving his quirky personality. Recently along with Cooper, we had three other kittens get adopted to their permanent homes. It is always a blessing to see the photos of the cats that have been adopted from our farm in their new forever homes. There are more cats that need homes who have been in the trailer far too long.
Life on the Farm
The farm also receives new kittens and cats weekly. One of these is a smaller cat we named, Leaf. He is a very affectionate cat who loves to play and also has the tendency to climb on you if he has the chance. We’re pretty sure he’s the one that taught Cooper how to do that. He has been in the trailer for about 3 months and is still looking for a forever home. He and Cooper would play together, but now that Cooper is adopted out, we can tell he is definitely feeling lonely. He is a smaller cat because of the malnutrition he received as a kitten, but is still healthy. He will take all the pets and play time he can get while we’re at the trailer and he follows us around as we clean it. Leaf is also very food driven and always appears right next to us the second the sound of a food is heard (the sound of a can opening).
What Can You Do To Help?
You can visit this link to view all of the amazing ways you can support a wonderful non-profit right in Brunswick! Adopting a pet is a rewarding experience for both the animal and the adoptee. Although it can be challenging, saving an animal and providing them with love and care is worth the scratched furniture and hairballs.
