What does being a Journalism Mentee mean to you?
I’ve really enjoyed being a mentee so far. It has helped me expand my horizons: understanding how to work SNO sites and being a Canva master. I’ve been able to review articles, galleries, pretty much everything that has been published on the site for this semester. I love being mentored by Ms. Graziano, she really gets me.
How has writing impacted you?
Personally, I’ve always liked writing. When I was younger, I loved to write my own short stories, poems, and read for extensive periods of time (punched a kid over this…). However, since high school has started, I’ve felt like I’ve had to write boring essays on subpar topics. However, by taking creative writing and being involved with a journalism club, I’ve found that writing can be fun again. I can express myself freely with words, and I’ve been able to produce better quality work from these activities. I’ve also become super awesome and I’ve gained credibility to “critique” what people write or produce.
What advice do you have for upcoming creative writing students? Journalism students?
Creative writing: Do not procrastinate!! While it can be hard to generate creative ideas to pursue, you cannot get behind. Creative writing is really a wonderful class, and was probably my favorite class I’ve taken… ever
Journalism: if you can, you should seize every opportunity to write. Whether it be a review, a short story, or even a photo gallery, someone will want to see it. It can be a great creative outlet, and you can even become a published author/photographer
Favorite high school memory?
My favorite high school memory was when I made my Beowulf project video with my friends in 10th grade. I had to be the most gorgeous “Young Beowulf” to ever exist.
What are your plans after high school?
My plans after high school are to go to a four year college to study English or Art History. I love to read and write, and I’m a bit of an art freak (thanks mom). I am so excited to leave high school as well and to experience life outside of Brunswick.
