Monday evening, September 23, was a chilling night for girls soccer. Brunswick girls JV soccer played against Walkersville girls JV soccer. The game started with light rain as Walkersville would have the ball to open the game. The game started out very slow with possession back and forth. Even as possession of the ball was interchanging Brunswick made the most of every possession. They were running up and down the field quicker than Walkersville: Brunswick was taking more shots, had more corner kicks, and was overall putting more pressure on the Walkersville goalie and defense. This overall pressure would lead to Brunswick’s first goal right before the end of the first half. Tatum Smith (freshman) got the ball at midfield and was able to break away. The Walkersville goalie tried to step up but with Tatum Smith only having to beat the keeper, Smith shot it from roughly 20 yards out. Smith scored easily and the half ended with Brunswick leading 1-0.
Coming back out into the second half the drizzle started to pour. The turf field was slippery and the players were slipping on some of their kicks. Nevertheless Brunswick still had complete control of the game. Brunswick’s defense Monday night was exceptional. Emmeline Marra (sophomore) the goalie for Brunswick has been a fill-in goalie these last couple weeks. Although she has played incredibly for Brunswick in her few matches as a goalie. This is what she had to say about Brunswick’s impeccable defense:
Great defense tonight you haven’t let up a goal in a couple weeks, what’s your secret?
“A great team that rarely lets the ball get past mid field.” Marra explained.
How do you feel the defense has been able to help you these last couple weeks?
“They have helped a lot! If you haven’t seen my goal kick is not good at all and the defense really helps me push the ball up field.”
With Brunswick dominating the second half, Walkersville never stood a chance. To put the nail in the coffin Katie Hargett (freshman) scored Brunswick’s second goal of the game with a great shot using her left foot. After the game Hargett was asked,
Great goal tonight and what were your thoughts leading up to the shot?
“I didn’t want the ball to go to my left foot but it did. But I thought I’m open so I’m just going to take it and I did and it worked out. I had been shooting a lot in the second half so I’m glad one worked out.”
You’re a team captain for Brunswick JV. How do you feel about the defense’s communication tonight?
“It was great! I think we stayed on our mark, pushed up and did a great job!”
In the end Brunswick was able to easily come out on top 2-0 against Walkersville! They were able to use their speed and strong defense to destroy any attempts at a Walkersville victory on a rainy Monday night.
