The bustle in hallways, and the familiar sound of the school bell ringing begins again as Brunswick High School welcomes its students back for this new school year. After a week of back-to-school events and senior year activities, students are back and better than ever to continue their high school education at Brunswick. This year there are many new students, as well as those who are returning back to the station to have a great school year. The Roaders are ready to improve the community, and teachers are ready to guide students to become leaders within their communities with new clubs, the beginning of fall sports, and exciting curriculums and classroom opportunities. As students head into the school year here is what some students have felt about the past few days being back in BHS.
Senior, Drew Thiede, is a varsity member on the boys’ soccer team and enjoys attending school events. Drew said that his favorite memory back at school so far was “…being in the Unified Gym class and helping the Learning for Life students again.” In the Unified Gym class general education students participate in gym activities such as soccer or working out in the weight room with students who are a part of the Learning for Life students. When asked what he was looking forward to the most this school year, Thiede said, “I’m looking forward to my senior soccer season at BHS.” Additionally, junior, Mark Yongbi, who is a varsity member of the boys’ basketball team said, “I enjoyed seeing all my friends that I didn’t see over the summer.” He shared that he is excited for basketball season this year and is ready to improve his skills even more on and off the court.
Charlee Wilhelm, a sophomore, said, “My favorite memory back at school so far is seeing some old friends from eighth grade,” and she is looking forward to “…building stronger relationships and improving my communication skills.”
Transitioning from middle school to high school can be an overwhelming experience to many students. Classes are more in depth, the school is larger, and the amount of students is two times the amount of students at the middle school. Freshman, Megan Dick, said that, “I like being back in school seeing all my friends and meeting new people […] I’m looking forward to performing at football games with POMS and attending school sports games.”
At Brunswick High School there are a few changes to the school year such as the Wednesday connection schedule, where the first half of the block is connections or students go to a club and then the second half of the block classes resume. Alongside schedule changes there are many clubs at Brunswick High School and some of these clubs are new! Some new clubs that are present this year are the Best Buddies Club, where general education students hang out and do fun activities such as Just Dance or attending the Polar Bear Plunge in February with students who have special needs. Additionally, there are the Young Democrats and Young Republicans clubs where students who want to become more politically engaged, inform others about civic engagement activities such as registering to vote.
As a result, many students new or returning along with all staff members are excited for this school year which will be filled with inclusivity, community, and spirit. So, make sure to stay engaged in classes as well as participating in school activities such as sports or joining a club! Hope everyone has had a great summer and a fun back to school so far.
