An annual award called the “Do-Gooder Award” recognizes outstanding citizens for their exceptional work in a variety of categories. This award is given at the county level, and for Frederick County, our very own staff member, Mr. Tuomey was selected and won the award!

Mr. Tuomey has been an amazing member of the BHS community as he has been teaching science at BHS for the past 19 years, at BMS for five years. Before he came to teach in Maryland, Mr. Tuomey was teaching for five years in Texas. He continues to be a very fundamental aspect of our community as he has always supported his students for many things. Mr. Tuomey said that his favorite part of teaching at BHS and in this community is, “How supportive the community is and the pride they carry for Brunswick.”
For the past 4 years, Mr. Tuomey has been the advisor for the BHS Poms Team. The Poms team has grown in size with more members and more support/ engagement from the community. Many people enjoy looking forward to the football games’ halftime performance where the Poms do a new routine. Mr. Tuomey is supported by Keli Dick, an active member in the Brunswick community as her oldest daughter, Jenna Dick, is a 2025 graduate of BHS, whereas, her youngest, Megan Dick, is a freshman this year. Dick took it upon herself and the support of the BHS Poms team to nominate Mr. Tuomey for this outstanding award.
Mr. Tuomey had to be nominated, the nomination required multiple letters of recommendations by the team members (Izzy Zimmerman & Savannah Landon), someone who worked on the project with him (Keli Dick) and people from the community- which were gathered and submitted. Then Mr. Tuomey had to do an in-person interview & video recording. Finally, Mr. Tuomey, was voted on against others and he was selected. Mr. Tuomey won this award for, “…his continued wand platform launching attributes to the Roaderettes, his dedication, management skills and serving as a liaison between students, coaches, faculty, the facility, the community, and administration”, said Dick.
As a team, all of the students on the Poms Team are beyond excited that the community recognized Mr. Tuomey for all the work he has put into the Roaderettes. Senior Captain, Phoebe Carpenter, said, “Mr. Tuomey has been a great advisor to poms for not only the countless hours he dedicates to running our team, but also the impact he’s made on each of us. Mr. Tuomey, without fail, has welcomed us into the Gym at six am in the morning, and he always makes sure we have what we need. But it’s his friendly good mornings and small talk that makes a difference. It’s apparent that Mr. Tuomey always wants what’s best for us as a team, and as students. And by always offering his helping hand and being a resource for support, both in and out of poms, is exactly what makes him stand out as a teacher at BHS and worthy of this award. Congrats Mr. Tuomey!”
