Trick Or Treat?

How Festive Are Brunswick Students?

As October has moved up on us, we can finally expect the change in color for the leaves, and the chilly northern air greets us for the first time in a few months. One of the holidays celebrating this is—Halloween. Every year many kids of different ages line up at different houses to show off their costumes and receive candy.

According to History.com modern Halloween and trick or treating started in the United States in 1840, after immigrants colonized. Halloween and trick or treating was on life support and almost vanished through the Great Depression and World War II.

After the baby boom following the end of World War II, Halloween was on the rise. Sugar production increased, and America had grown around this tradition that we still celebrate today.

One debate in students’ minds is the age restriction for trick or treating: how old is too old for trick or treating?

When asked in a survey, out of about 60 students, 64.4% of them said that they were going trick or treating themselves, while 33.9% of students said they would not go this year.

When asked for their ages: 2 people said they are 14, 22 people are 15, 12 people are 16, 18 people are 17, one person is 18, and finally one of the participants is 59.

When asked if a costume should be required to go trick or treating: 52 students said yes, while 7 students said that a costume should not be required.

Brunswick High School teacher, Mr. Johnson, said in response to whether or not high school students should be trick or treating that, “Its better for them to trick or treat rather than cause trouble.”

Sophomore, Max Centrowski, said, “I think that high school students should be allowed to go trick or treating as long as they have a costume.”

Towns like Jacksonville, Illinois, and even St. Michaels, Maryland, have put age limits on trick or treating for those over the age of 12 or 13.

What do you think? Are you going trick or treating this year? How old do you think is too old for trick or treating? Drop your answers in the comment section so others can see your point of view.
