In Frederick, Maryland, the increasing population growth over the past 10 years is inescapable. Just trying to find a spot to park downtown is an Olympic sport in itself, the traffic is heavier—don’t even bother driving down Route 15 when it hits rush hour, and not to mention, grocery stores are condensed, and lines are becoming longer than ever.

Around here, there’s a common theme of food shopping that people tend to enjoy more though; organic, ethical, high-quality and specialty products with a passionate following—Trader Joe’s.
The problem is, Frederick remains without a store, leaving a growing and expectant population waiting for its debut.
22 miles away lands the closest location from Brunswick High School in Leesburg, VA. The passionate manager of that location, Chris Moring, says that people from Maryland come in every single day.
The environment of Trader Joe’s stands out, the main selling point of this store is the experience you are getting when you walk in. Local handmade art is scattered across the store, and friendly employees are all around.
Jules is a spirited employee at Trader Joe’s. “I’ve never not looked forward to coming to work because our environment is very team oriented, and we have a lot of people who work here and we all get along really well,” Jules said.
With this, the store has an opportunity to provide well needed job opportunities in Frederick.
All Trader Joe’s have something in common, the compact store is generally a small 10,000-15,000 square feet, fitting maybe 100 customer capacity for the most comfortable shopping. For reference, the Weis in Brunswick is 56,000 square feet.
“We don’t have a self-checkout either,” Moring said. He says that self-checkout is proven to take longer to get through when not manned properly. “We have such a great system down and we rely a lot on teamwork.”

The prices stand out at Trader Joe’s, as they’re significantly cheaper than products under a brand name found somewhere else because almost everything is a Trader Joe’s private label.
“You’re guaranteed to get no artificial colors, artificial flavors, [and] no GMOs,” Moring said.
The Frederick townspeople have been begging for a Trader Joe’s, and the community is eager for a cheap, fun, and convenient grocery store.

Yes- live in brunswick & a frederick location would be very successful. I know trader joes is very particular on selecting a location but I’m sure theres plenty of vacant locations that would work. My daughter lives in rockville and they have 3 trader joes! I don’t get it.
I sent a letter to trader joes corporate customer service pleading them to please look at frederick- I received a very polite letter back thanking me for my interest and they would pass it onto their real estate people.
