BHS Seniors Take First Steps In Civic Engagement
As the nation heads into the next midterm elections, a new wave of voters is stepping into the spotlight. Seniors at Brunswick High School (BHS), along with the rest of the county’s seniors are eligible to vote in the upcoming midterm elections.
Midterm elections, which take place halfway through a president’s term, often serve as a referendum on current leadership. In the upcoming election, seniors can vote for local offices, as well as state level offices.
With every election, there are primary elections. Primary Elections are for each political party to vote for who they want to move forward to the general election/midterm election.
Primary elections for the 2026 midterm elections are held on June 23, 2026. Then the general midterm elections are held on October 13, 2026.
You are able to vote in person, or through mail-in ballots. Seniors will be able to do out of state voting, continuing to use your home address, not necessarily your college address through absentee ballots.
Additionally, important information to consider is voter registration. In order to vote in primaries & general elections, everyone must be registered to vote.
In the upcoming midterm elections, individuals can vote for County Council Executive, County Council Members (for your district & at-large member), Board of Education, County Party Central Committees members, State’s Attorney, Clerk of the Circuit Courts, Register of Wills, Judges of the Orphans Court, and County Sheriff.
It is important to know, for local elections Frederick County is broken up into districts. Brunswick, Jefferson, Burkittsville, Myersville, Point of Rocks, and Middletown are apart of District One.
County Council is a board of seven members, one for each district (five districts), and two at large members with one being the President who is currently Brad Young. These individuals then create and initiate legislation for the county.
They serve as the legislative branch to the County Council Executive, which would be the executive branch. The current County Council Executive is Jessica Fitzwater.
The Board of Education makes the education policy for Frederick County Public Schools and makes decisions about our education.
Register of the Wills is in charge of registering Frederick county residents’ wills.
The Judge of the Orphans Court presides over who inherits estates of those who have passed, with or without a will. Additionally, they can occasionally assist in deciding guardianship of minors.

As a citizen of the United States, it is important to act out your civic duties such as voting. The system/idea of voting as been used since the Enlightenment Age. Voting is a big responsibility to help you, as well as your community.
Voting is important as it is how you select someone you think will represent you best. In order to know what candidate will represent you the best, it is important to do your research on each candidate.

This is amazing for the upcoming adults to understand their future and to take accountability of who they want running the government. It makes sure they have no confusion about how to vote.
