In this week’s edition, the reader is still on Hatteras Island, this time however, is looking for food and dining options. When in the Outer Banks (OBX), try to avoid as many chain restaurants and stores as possible, with the exception of Duck Donuts which was started there. The reason for avoiding the chain restaurants, is to find better tasting and higher quality food and beverages.

  • Stu’s Food Truck: This food truck, located just steps away from the Avon pier in its parking lot is perfect for those who want a cheep, quick, and easy American style breakfast right by the beach.
  • Duck Donuts: Started in Duck, North Carolina, this now franchise has locations all up and down the Outer Banks, including one on Hatteras Island. Located in Avon by the Food Lion, Duck Donuts specializes in made-to-order donuts. You can order top favorites off of the menu like the iconic Maple Bacon or you can create your own. Duck donuts also specializes in breakfast sandwiches and coffee.
  • Roots & Leaves: Located right across the street from the iconic Conner’s Supermarket, Roots & Leaves is the only place on the island to order vegan coffee and donuts.
  • Muffins & Scones: Located in the purple building near Frank & Frans Bait & Tackle, Muffins & Scones specializes in any and all baked goods.
  • Avon Pier: Located right on the beach, Avon Pier has the cheapest coffee on the island. One cup will cost you just $1 without tax. Microwavable breakfast sandwiches are also available, including a microwave on site.
  • Bro’s: Located in Avon right by the Food Lion, Bros serves up bar and sports food for a casual dinner or lunch experience. A full service bar is also located here.
  • Frisco Sandwich Company: Located in Frisco right next door to Frisco Rod and Gun, as well as the Shell gas station, the Frisco Sandwich Company serves up many hot and cold subs and sandwiches. Fries and fried pickles are also a staple of the menu.
  • Diamond Shoals Restaurant: Located in the heart of Buxton, North Carolina, Diamond Shoals is the perfect place to get a lunch or dinner meal. Famous for their historic wall decor, clam chowder and their salad bar. It is the perfect restaurant for both the seafood and non-seafood lover.
  • Cockeyed Clam: This restaurant is known for its being flip flop friendly with class. Known for serving up the best shirley temples on the island, Cockeyed Clam has a full service bar as well as numerous seafood options. Some of the freshest shrimp and scallops are sold here.
  • Gidget’s Pizza: Located in the Food Lion shopping center in Avon, Gidget’s is the closest thing to the former Nino’s Pizza, which was known by many as some of the best pizza on the island. Gidget’s is cheap, fast, and easy. It is worth the drive from Buxton as it is noticeably better than Angelo’s Pizza.
  • Hatteras Volunteer Fire Department: Saturday Fish Fry. This fish fry includes a large platter for $18 which includes two fillets of fish, two large hush puppies, coleslaw, potato salad, and a drink. For $13, you can get the same platter with only one filet. This is the freshest fish on the island and is cooked the way many locals like it.
  • Pangea Tavern: Located in Avon just steps from the Avon Pier, Pangea Tavern offers fresh delicious food with a flip flop friendly, yet upper class feel. Diners will have the option to dine in the normal dining area, bar, or the “Shark Tank.” The “Shark Tank” is an enclosed, air conditioned back room that used to be a patio. The room features sharks with different designs painted on them regarding their name. The seafood and fried pickles are great and served fast.
  • Uncle Eddie’s Frozen Custard & Mini-Golf: Located in the heart of Buxton, this place has a great $10 unlimited mini golf course that is fun yet challenging. There are many different ice cream flavors and toppings. Frozen custard is also a staple and is a great price. Make sure to get there early, because it gets crowded as it gets later. This is also a very family friendly place.
  • Dizzy’s Ice Cream Truck: Look out for this truck driving around Avon. As the only local ice cream truck on Hatteras Island, Dizzy’s, is always driving around and can be seen in the afternoons and evenings. The selection is great for a small ice cream truck, and prices are cheap and affordable.

Feel free to try other establishments not on this list, especially since many establishments change every few years. Also, remember that visiting during off-peak hours, can improve your experience.
