What does being a part of the literary magazine The Creative Conductor mean to you?
Being a part of The Creative Conductor is sort of a final farewell to Brunswick High School for me. I’ve been here since freshman year (big surprise there), and each year I tell myself that I’m a little closer to graduating. But, now that I’m here and almost at the finish line for my high school education, I find myself feeling more sad than happy. I’ve met a lot of people and worked with a lot of people that have helped me discover an even stronger passion for life, and striving to do what I love most with it. So thank you Brunswick, for guiding me to where I am today.
How has writing impacted you?
Since I was a kid I have been sticking my stuffy nose into any book I could get my grubby little fingers on. There was food, water, and books, what was my means for survival. Each book I have read from around the time I was an infant, up until now I have engraved into my brain like it’s a scrapbook. Which is why I loved writing when I first started doing it. I started with comics first (which were very poorly drawn, I’ve gotten better I swear) based off of my favorite shows, my favorite books, my favorite stuffed animals, my favorite anything. Each silly little drawing and vowel were crafted with care. I had entire novels planned out in my head that I still think about writing. These lofty dreams and fantasies have driven me to be more expressive, and confident in the things I am extensively informed on. Writing is now a part of my soul, in my name, and in me.
What advice do you have for upcoming creative writing students?
Honestly, just keep up the good work, and focus on what you do best. I entered this course thinking that it would be fun, and I wasn’t disappointed. I’ve been able to talk to a lot of people who have the same interests as me, and the same love for writing. Getting feedback is also great, and just the right amount of humbling.
Favorite high school memory?
My most treasured High School Memory, or Experience in this case, was being the Assistant Stage Manager for “Annie” last year. Annie has been my favorite musical since I was a little kid, so seeing it come to life from backstage was magical. Each moment was so full of life. Getting to construct each scene, petting both of the dogs playing Sandy, singing along with the actors from backstage for more background singers while organizing props, I was always surprised. Some days I was absolutely exhausted from the late rehearsals, but it was so worth it to see everything come together the way it did. I am so proud of all of the people I worked with for all of the effort and passion put into their performances, whether they be backstage or on stage. Now, as Drama Club President and the Stage Manager for Shows, I am glad to say I am sticking with theater, and won’t be dropping it anytime soon.
What are your plans after high school?
After school I have plans of going to a four year college for an English major and history minor. I have already applied to Towson and Saint Mary’s College of Maryland, so I am super excited for that. After I am done with that I want to keep on writing. Whether it be a Journalist, an Editor, an Author, or heck, even a historian, I look forward to it. I love everything about writing.
