Since its founding in 2016 by Emma Damazzo and Rachel Beall, the Minerva’s Mechanics robotics team has strived to be proactive and work for what First Tech Challenge, the creator of the robotics competition, works for—overcoming challenges, cooperating, and respect are the foundations of the competition. This year especially the teams have had to overcome many challenges, and gained the lifelong skills of “problem-solving, perseverance, and creativity,” according to mentor Mrs. Benitez-Smith.

The team has also participated in many outreach events and activities, including donating old parts to the middle and elementary schools, showing middle schoolers how the robot works, and creating interest in STEM. Recently they participated in the Frosty Friday and December Saturday events in Downtown Frederick collecting donations at a marshmallow roasting station.

No one could have predicted the profound impact Minerva’s Mechanics would have on students in STEM, the community, and classes at Brunswick.

Rising freshmen have shown a much greater interest in STEM and computer science than in years past. Due to the increase in freshmen interested in STEM that joined the team, the Minerva’s Mechanics created the Apollo’s Architects team this season. The school chapter of the Computer Science Honor Society (CSHS) has also grown because of this interest, and now works harder than ever to promote STEM for future generations.

No one could have predicted the profound impact Minerva’s Mechanics would have on students in STEM, the community, and classes at Brunswick. But it has done all of that and more. With a name originating from the goddess of handicrafts and professions, they have truly lived up to their title.

“Problem-solving, perseverance, and creativity”

— Mrs. Benitez-Smith

With five sub teams, the robotics team will have the topic for you. If you are interested in joining the robotics team, or in STEM in general, please go to room 108 and ask Mrs. Benitez-Smith about these wonderful opportunities and the next season.
