What does being on the staff of The Garnet and Gold Gazette mean to you?
Being on the Garnet & Gold Gazette staff has changed my life. When I started this journey my sophomore year of high school, I never would’ve imagined the impact this program would have on my life, daily. I have been given a voice in my community that I will never take for granted. People trust me to supply them with a plethora of information about any, and everything. I am so grateful for all of the life lessons and guidance the Garnet & Gold Gazette has given me.
How has being on the staff impacted you?
The Garnet & Gold Gazette has had an impact on me that will last a lifetime. I have been able to connect with my community on a level that I had never anticipated. I have created so many relationships through the process of reporting. I feel as though being on the staff has made me more aware of community, national, and global issues. Most importantly, the site and I have grown together: constantly adapting to current trends and brainstorming ways to continuously engage our audience.
What advice do you have for upcoming journalism students?
My best advice is to figure out your passion. Reporting national or even community news isn’t for everyone. There are so many different aspects of journalism – arts & entertainment, opinion, or even sports. What you always want to ensure though, as a reporter, is that you are producing media that will engage your audience. You may also choose to concentrate on website design or even the PR of the Garnet & Gold Gazette. It will always be in your best interest to find the area in which you excel at and enjoy.
Favorite high school memory?
My favorite high school memory was winning my Best of SNO. I will never forget that day. I was walking into school at 7:30 in the morning and I received a message with a photo of a paper that said “Best of SNO” with my name on it. Adrenaline immediately ran through my body as I am, and will always be, the first person at Brunswick High School to be presented with this award. In the following week we had a celebratory pizza party with the entire staff. It was an amazing week full of happiness that radiated through the entire G&G Gazette staff.
What are your plans after high school?
After high school, I intend on attending a four year college majoring in Journalism with a minor in Public Relations or Marketing. My dream after college is to write for a big news outlet such as The New York Times or The Washington Post.
