The Brunswick Railroaders had a battle Tuesday, Feb. 4, with a hard-fought 62-47 victory over Boonsboro in a basketball game defined by defensive intensity, physicality, and overall hustle.
Despite losing the opening tip, Brunswick jumped ahead to lead 4-0 before the Warriors found their footing. The Warriors clawed back, sloppy possessions plagued both sides throughout the first quarter. Brunswick were also struggling to make shots so to counteract this Brunswick would turn Boonsboro turnovers into transition buckets as they took an 11-6 lead late in the first and extended it to 14-6 heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter saw Boonsboro briefly threaten Brunswick’s lead after a rare four-point on a three point shot for an and one three. But the Railroaders came right back with a 5-0 run, but this momentum would be slowed when Brunswick committed their 5th foul putting Boonsboro into the bonus only three minutes into the quarter.
Head Coach of Brunswick Larry Brown commented on this when asked if Boonsboro got into the bonus early in the second quarter on how Brunswick adjusted defensively to avoid foul trouble the rest of the game.
“Well, it’s different game to game. And we had a lot of our top guys that had, they were in foul trouble. So then they just, again, had to be more disciplined. That kind of goes hand in hand with some of those fouls that they were picking up […] Just take what’s there for you, play solid, and listen to the scout because we key in on certain guys,” Brown said.
Despite getting into early foul trouble Brunswick’s defense tightened, extending their lead over Boonsboro with the half time score being 30-17.
“Defensively, we wanted to keep it simple,” said Brown. “We had a team-high 14 or 15 steals today. We just had to learn to be more disciplined.”
That discipline paid off after 11 turnovers in the first half, Brunswick committed just four in the second half.
The third quarter remained competitive as Boonsboro slowly chipped away at Brunswick’s, closing the gap to 45-36 with a 4-2 run to end the third quarter. But Brunswick’s senior guard, Nick Martinis, took over in the fourth, helping spark an 8-2 run that pushed the lead back to 16 points with three minutes remaining.
Martinis filled up the whole stat line: 14 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals. When asked what in his game made the biggest difference, Martinis said “I was finding my open guys, keeping my head up […] My rebounding gave me second chance opportunities for putback layups.”
Coach Brown praised Martinis’ versatility: “Nick can score at all three levels, but today I liked the other things he was doing. He’s a combo guard and a natural scorer who can also make his teammates better.”
Brunswick’s ability to stay calm down the stretch and capitalize on defensive stops sealed their victory Tuesday night, improving their record and looking for a state title.
