Deportation rates are doubling in size all over the United States.
Over the past year the deportation rate has increased drastically. Schools all across the country have been holding walkouts in protest of the immigration system and “U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement” (I.C.E.) more well known as I.C.E.
Florida, known as our sunshine state, but maybe it isn’t so bright with a huge number of nearly 20,000 immigration arrests with over 100,000 pending deportation cases by the end of 2025. These deportations and immigration arrests have taken away children’s parents and many people away from their loved ones.
Along with many others around the world Lena Campbell, sophomore at Brunswick High School says she has begun feeling sad and worried because: “They are no longer looking for illegal immigrants but are targeting anyone […] as a granddaughter of an immigrant I fear for her safety,” Campbell said.
Throughout the month of Jan 2026 two deaths were tragically caused by I.C.E. One being a 37-year-old mother, Renee Nicole Good and the other being 37-year-old Alex Pretti. On Jan. 7, Good was shot while in her car during a raid. Similar to Good, Pretti was shot multiple times on Jan. 24.
Schools all around the country have scheduled walk outs where students leave during the middle of the school day and walk around in protest to I.C.E. Recently a school North Central High School located in Indianapolis had a walkout held on Feb. 2, 2026, which was led by freshman, Liam Bastnagel and senior Emma-Louise Akinleye. Many students came out with signs saying things such as “Nobody is Illegal on stolen land” and “Education not Deportation.”
The local student from Brunswick High School, Xiomara Ramos, agrees with the walkouts happening and thinks they are heavily impact.
“With all the protests and walkouts, I think they’re speaking up at public areas showing how wrong the deportations and all the discrimination we face on a daily basis are,” Ramos said. Along with Ramos many school and students across the country think the protests and walkouts spread awareness to benefit their community and the country.
