Recently, several students were asked what their favorite elective offered at Brunswick High School.
Electives are courses which don’t correlate to the main subjects such as English, Math, Science, and History as major credits. They help students explore the more artistic side of learning, whether that be playing an instrument, molding pottery, or even studying Greek mythology.
Senior Gabe Rodgers took Creative Writing and spoke on his passion for writing.
“I love Creative Writing. I think it’s how I can speak freely, especially when I learned how to write poems,” Rodgers said.
Creative Writing is an English elective taught by Mrs. Graziano. Junior Leonie Ouvrier took the class as well and really enjoyed the subject matter.
“Creative Writing is my favorite. The teacher was nice and the subject was cool,” Ouvrier said.
Brunswick High School offers electives involving technology, ranging from advanced to intermediate classes.
Senior Michael Cunanan took Advanced Computer Concepts because it’s an interest for his future.
“[It is] my favorite elective because it helps me pursue what I am interested in majoring in college… but Ms. Day is pretty chill,” Cunanan said.
Sophomore Caden Monge is taking Computer Graphics, a class geared toward creating and displaying anything from simple pictures to complex 3-D models, “… because you get to learn about using the computer and how to create designs,” Monge said.
After interviewing a variety of students, a general consensus was made that team sports was a favorite among all grade levels. Senior Gabe Paschalides is no stranger to the class.
“Team Sports because Baker allows us to compete in various fun sports,” Paschalides said.
Both Cayden Chanhatasilpa, a senior, and Chris Flores, a sophomore, agreed with their favorite elective being Team Sports as well, listing their competitive nature and connection with athletics as the major drivers for their decision.
Ceramics is taught by Ms. Mangold. Senior Clara Held adored the class.
“Ceramics because I get to hang out with my friends and I love the teacher,” Held said.
Several music classes are offered at BHS such as marching band, concert band, orchestra, guitar, and piano.
Senior Braylen Richmond is taking a guitar elective this semester, among other music classes.
“Probably Guitar. You can… learn at your own pace and there’s a lot of freedom,” Richmond said.
Overall, many students are attracted to physically active electives, while fewer students care more about the musical classes such as band and guitar. While everyone is different, there are a select few electives that stand above the rest.

Guitar is the best elective at the school by a mile, no competition.
