What does being on the staff of the Garnet and Gold Gazette mean to you?
Being on the Garnet and Gold Gazette, to me, is a rewarding experience because you get to see how your community responds to the things you take time to write. It’s also a great way to create a creative outlet for yourself. I find that journalism is a way I can make any idea or topic that comes to mind into a discussion. It’s good to see your word out there.
How has being on the staff impacted you?
Being on the journalism staff made me realize how natural it is for me to put my thoughts into words. I am new to journalism and still have a lot to learn as this is my first introduction to it but it connects to many other parts of my life that I consider strengths. It has also been a great way for me to face my social anxiety by putting myself in tough situations like interviewing and interacting with people I don’t normally talk to. After taking journalism I feel like I have a much clearer direction for what I want to get
into my future. I am even considering majoring in Mass Communications because of how much I enjoy the world of writing, journalism, and expressing ideas.
What advice do you have for upcoming journalism students?
I would tell new members of the staff that they should make the most of their experience in this class and to challenge themselves. I also would suggest that they should always keep in mind that any idea or topics they think about, can become a piece of writing they can become proud of. All your thoughts matter!
Favorite high school memory?
My favorite high school memory is playing Annie in “Annie” during my sophomore year for the Brunswick High School drama club. It was my first time with that big of a role and I had so much fun being in the spotlight for the first time ever. The seniors especially were a great support system for me and I can now say that I’ve made so many great connections and memories from doing that production.
What are your plans after high school?
My current plans after high school are to attend Frederick Community College (FCC) to obtain my associates degree and then transfer to a four year college to complete my bachelors. I am not entirely sure of my major but I am highly considering Mass Communications. If I enjoy the major I stick with enough I may even consider obtaining my masters degree. And overall, I just want to make sure that regardless of, if things go to plan, that I can at least make sure my future is full of happiness.
