What does being on the staff of the Garnet and Gold Gazette mean to you?
Being on the staff of the Garnet and Gold Gazette means everything to me as I have gained a voice in the community. I have been a part of the Gazette for the past two years and have enjoyed every minute of it. Initially, I didn’t have much of an interest in journalism, as I didn’t know how to use my voice to advocate for things happening in the school and community. Since then, I have found that voice and appreciation for journalism as I have learned how much of an impact one article can have. I am thankful for all of the advice and support that I have received from this class.
How has being on the staff impacted you?
Being on the staff has impacted me in so many ways as I have learned how to think more creatively and challenge myself with my writing. I have become more aware of problems and issues in the world that need reporting on. This past year I had written an article about funding in classrooms. Before writing that article I had never given much thought to how little funds some classrooms are given. During this process I was able to learn just how much of an issue this is because there are many teachers struggling to obtain the materials they need to teach students while following the curriculum. Writing this article meant the world to me as I was able to shine light on this topic and hopefully make a difference on staff and in students’ lives. I greatly appreciate the journey I went on to write this article as I had to do interviewing, as well as extensive research on this topic while navigating criticism and the challenges that come along with writing an article about this type of topic. Journalism has allowed me to have a much deeper understanding and appreciation for it.
What advice do you have for upcoming journalism students?
For any upcoming journalism students, I advise you to never back down from an article because of challenges and criticism. You will quickly figure out that not everybody will agree with what you are saying and what you are trying to write about, but you should never let that stop you from writing about something that you are passionate about. As long as you go about the process correctly and respectfully. Never let other harsh voices diminish your voice.
Favorite high school memory?
My favorite high school memory is from this past winter and going to Five Below with my Unified Gym class. Unified Gym has been by far one of my favorite classes that I have ever taken (other than journalism) as I get to work with students with disabilities alongside other general education students. Around Christmas time, everyone in the class went to Five Below to help these students buy Christmas gifts for their families. It was so much fun walking around the store and shopping for a while. When we got back to the school we wrapped the presents and had a pizza party. It was definitely one of the best days I’ve ever had at school and something that I will always remember.
What are your plans after high school?
After graduating high school I plan to attend McDaniel College for elementary education and special education. Ultimately I want to become a special education teacher in a high school level learning for life classroom. I hope that one day I am able to shine a positive light on these students’ lives and teach them academics, but also to be confident in who they are.
