The Garnet & Gold Gazette (G&G), came to the community with a teacher and a group of “Engineers” with a goal to revive their school newspaper.

Mrs. Lauren Graziano is the adviser to the newspaper and started on online newspaper back in 2021.
“To give Brunswick students a voice, and an opportunity to share things that are important to them,” Graziano said.
With 15 original writers and one advisor, Slowly the program would ramp up including designing the original site as well as choosing the iconic colors we use today.
The brand is very specific. One of the most iconic parts of it are their colors. These colors chosen by the advisor and the writers were “990033” [Garnet], and “eac46b” [Gold]. These colors would be applied to the site as well as the foundations for their many logos. Over time, the “engineers” would start adopting styles to set their site apart, leading them to start capitalizing the first letter of each word in their headlines and sub headlines.
The Gazette would then continue to change logos up till their current logo was created by former students, and Editor-in-Chief Emeritus, class of 2024, Kylie Lancaster.
Current Design Editor, Kloey Donovan, when asked what designs set the (G&G) apart and shared bout the uniqueness of the Gazette’s designs.
“I think our header is very unique, featuring the story of Brunswick,” Donovan said. “ We have stuck with our theme.”
What started as teacher features including our first article “Get to Know Radiant Rusenko” written by former “Engineer” Carla Kemtchouang, and many teacher feature articles, has branched out to more genres and news categories like multimedia.
This multimedia-like short videos and podcasts have become very popular for students, as it allows them to produce other forms of media. Video Editor, Henry Maeshiro, prefers to work on this type of content.
“In modern day, it’s the best form of promotion for us, and it’s the best for advertising,” Maeshiro said. “It’s engaging.”
The club would continue to function improving with every article and form of media published. Even with little resources and funding, they would continue to build their experience as well as assets like equipment to continue the program.
The journalism advisor would continue to make purchases of mini mics and small battery cameras to assist the staff in their goal: better quality work. Over time the staff would be able to borrow higher quality Cannon cameras from the Career Technology, Education department (CTE). A large globe microphone would also be donated by a parent for the use of podcasting too.
To this day, the club still has limited resources, compared to bigger programs, but finds success with the use of all of their resources.
Social Media Manager, Carlee Poole, wrote the article “Lack of Resources in Journalism,” expressing the challenges of running a journalism program in a small school like Brunswick High School (BHS).
“The Gazette doesn’t have their own personal cameras for students to use for articles, galleries, and videos” Poole said.
Over time, the journalism club alone would not suffice with the desire for the “engineers” or reporters to keep writing. This would lead to the insulation of a journalism class at (BHS). Most of the club, a minor 15 students would then continue writing for the first online paper, this time receiving a grade to do it. This program, which would run in the spring along with the assistance of the club, all year, would lead them to get their first ever Best of School News Online (SNO) award as well as the (SNO) Distinguished Site award in 2023. Just two years after starting the club and online newspaper.
The club would then continue to win again for the 2024-2025 school year, and is actively working on achieving the award for the 2025-2026 school year. The club continues to actively produce content and continue covering news in the Brunswick area.
The engineers continue to find ways to create a new monthly edition each month for the community to enjoy. It started with a small club newsletter, and has continued to find success in many various ways throughout its time as the Garnet & Gold Gazette.
The staff has found ways to make journalism applicable to their own lives each day. Many in future careers in later post-secondary studies, and some in ways to master a process, design, style, or video promotion to take with them beyond the walls of BHS.
The engineers and their writing, videos, ads, and designs have made history in their own ways, one track at a time.

Greate job everyone. This is the best newspaper in Frederick County. Mrs. Graziano should buy donuts for the whole class. Who wrote the article? I would love to know so I can complement them and read more of their work.
